Turns out apples don’t just keep the doctor away; they can keep fat at bay, too, according to research from Washington State University. And it’s not just apples—fruits like grapes, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries, when eaten, can convert excess white fat into calorie-burning beige fat because of an antioxidant called resveratrol.

In the study, mice were fed a high-fat diet, and half received resveratrol in amounts equivalent to 12 ounces of fruit (about two or three servings) per day for humans.  The mice who consumed resveratrol gained about 40 percent less weight than the control mice.

“Polyphenols in fruit, including resveratrol, increase gene expression that enhances the oxidation of dietary fats so the body won’t be overloaded,” says Min Du, a professor of animal sciences. “They convert white fat into beige fat which burns lipids off as heat—helping to keep the body in balance and prevent obesity and metabolic dysfunction.”

Resveratrol has also been touted for its ability to slow aging, boost endurance, fight cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity and diabetes, so stay tuned to see if they ring true.
